Why a Monohull Sailing Charter vs a Catamaran Cruise?

A monohull can give you that real feel of sailing. Wind in your hair. Sounds of the ocean. Waves lapping against the hull. The heel of the boat. Besides which, on Kaikiwi, your charter is private. Catamarans are mostly known for sharing the ride with unknown others, and party-time maitais. Nothing wrong with that. Your concierge will send you to the latter. But be resourceful and keep looking for that off-the-beaten “track” sail like the one offered on Kaikiwi. Occasionally, I get a call from a concierge but mostly they search no further than the catamaran supported by their hotel. Which may lead you to think that that is all there is.

Kaikiwi really does take advantage of Hawaii’s famous tradewinds . Sails are hoisted at the very beginning of your charter. Generally, the catamaran will motor to Diamond Head and then pop a small sail at the bow (front) for an easy downwind sail. The experience on Kaikiwi is all about the sailing and ocean time with friends/family.. I have newbies through to old salts. Both. All. Smiles all around. NO complaints. The catamaran experience is not about the sailing; it’s more about the party and the gathering. Do be aware too, unfortunately, many of the charter monohulls on Oahu give you the same experience as the catamaran…the sailing is often forgotten; motoring is indeed easier.

Each to their own tho. You may well prefer the 2-hull, level catamaran over the one-hull (hence “mono”) heel.

A Perfect Hawaii Sailing Charter

You have just navigated your way to Sail Blue Hawaii LLC and your perfect Hawaii sailing charter. “Kaikiwi” sails from Oahu’s south (protected) shore, not far from Waikiki, past beautiful coastline in the cobalt blue blue waters of our Pacific.  Wildlife such as green sea turtles, “honu”, dolphins, “nai’a”, humpback whales, “kohola” (in winter season only), and flying fish, “malolo” are some of the critters we may see as we sail. Beautiful views of Oahu, famous Diamond Head and, on clear days, far in the distance, Molokai and Lanai can sometimes be seen.

Talking about Navigation…

I was sailing with a family the other day and happened to mention that new boats are sold without a compass. Astounding, I know. They couldn’t believe it either. Well then, how the heck to you get from A to B? Everything today is electronic, from your charts to your navigation systems. Hence…no (“need for a”) compass. It’s like kids growing up and not knowing how to tie their shoe laces or even what a shoe lace is. In many ways, the young generations can be envied for what is at their fingertips. But it is very sad the day the compass dies, along with the paper chart (which cannot be purchased any more. If you really must have one, you have to special order it.) I love to have my hands and eyes all over paper charts. I love to use and teach with my compass. I am hanging on.

The Perfect Hawaii Sunset Cruise Experience

I was going to write about something else this week, but last night changed my mind during the most perfect Hawaii sunset cruise. What made it perfect? The conditions were awesome with the 12-18 knot trade winds that Hawaii is known for. But so much more than that: a husband wishing to celebrate his wife and mother’s day with their adult children. This was one beautiful day to sail around Diamond Head into Maunalua Bay. My guests got the last good sailing in before Oahu was rocked by a decent winter storm. Not all Sou’Westers are bad 😎. We were lucky. What a peaceful time.
