Summer is perfect for Hawaii Monohull Sailing.

Whether you are a “newbie”, an old salt or in between, nothing will thrill you more than summer Hawaii monohull sailing! Why? A summertime monohull sail in Hawaii offers a style of sailing that’s hard to replicate anywhere else on the planet’s waters for many reasons:

1. It feels like real sailing

As Kaikiwi heels (leans), she responds directly to the waves and wind, powered only by the sails. At Sail BLUE Hawaii, we sail your entire charter so, instead of feeling like you’re riding on a floating motorised platform, you feel safely connected to wind and ocean.

2. Summer brings ideal trade winds

During Hawaii’s hot summer months, the northeast trade winds are generally more consistent and stronger, helping the seas to flatten out; seas are often calmer than in winter. This translates to:

  • Steady, enjoyable sailing conditions.
  • Comfortable temperatures with cooling ocean breezes.
  • Less chance of weather-related cancellations.
  • Longer daylight hours for afternoon and sunset sails.

3. A monohull creates a more personal experience

Kaikiwi offers PRIVATE sailing which limits your party to no more than 6-pax—just you, your family/friends, or your intimate other in a truly romantic setting. This stands in stark contrast to the local catamarans that pack on dozens of passengers. Specifically, you enjoy:

  • More interaction with Kaikiwi’s captain (no obligation; haha)
  • A quiet intimate atmosphere.
  • A more relaxing trip, with or without your favourite playlist; no loud thumping music that travels annoyingly over the water to neighbouring vessels; no party crowds.

4. A closer connection with nature

Without the engine, Kaikiwi under sail is truly quiet. You can hear the wind in the rigging and the water flowing along the hull. This quiet sanctuary lets us spot Hawaiian spinner dolphins, green sea turtles, flying fish, mermaids, and—later in the year—humpback whales with minimal disturbance to the animals.

5. Spectacular Hawaiian scenery

Summer sailing off Oahu offers excellent visibility for taking in our volcanic coastline, the lush Ko’olau mountains, and crystal-clear azure blue water. Every day my guests remark on the color of this Pacific Ocean water! On clear days, far in the distance, Molokai and Lanai can sometimes be seen. This spectacular backdrop sets the stage for memorable sunset sails, where warm evening light reflects beautifully off the open ocean.

6. A classic maritime experience

Monohulls have been the traditional sailing vessel for centuries. If you’re looking for the romance of sailing rather than simply spending time on the water, Kaikiwi provides a timeless experience.

7. Who will enjoy it most?

A summer Hawaii monohull sail is an excellent choice if you:

  • Appreciate authentic sailing and genuine cruising.
  • Prefer small-group intimacy over commercial crowds.
  • Want a peaceful, uncrowded ocean outing.
  • Enjoy feeling the wind and the easy, natural lull of the sea.

Hawaii Monohull Sailing at its Best

At Sail BLUE Hawaii you will indeed find Hawaii monohull sailing at its best. Look no further. Capt. Gaelyn really SAILS Kaikiwi, your private 42-ft monohull. While other charter companies may motor-sail, or not raise their sails at all, at Sail BLUE Hawaii you will have your sailing experience customised. Your experience can be a gentle, relaxed (for first time/unsure/easy sunset) sail to a more rigorous day-sail. Or, as often happens due to the trade winds, you’ll have a bit of everything. Smiles all around. NO complaints.

Why a Monohull Sailing Charter vs a Catamaran Cruise?

A monohull can give you that real feel of sailing. Wind in your hair. Sounds of the ocean. Waves lapping against the hull. The heel of the boat. Besides which, on Kaikiwi, your charter is private. Catamarans are mostly known for sharing the ride with unknown others, and party-time maitais. Nothing wrong with that. Your concierge will send you to the latter. But be resourceful and keep looking for that off-the-beaten “track” sail like the one offered on Kaikiwi. Occasionally, I get a call from a concierge but mostly they search no further than the catamaran supported by their hotel. Which may lead you to think that that is all there is.

Kaikiwi really does take advantage of Hawaii’s famous tradewinds . Sails are hoisted at the very beginning of your charter. Generally, the catamaran will motor to Diamond Head and then pop a small sail at the bow (front) for an easy downwind sail. The experience on Kaikiwi is all about the sailing and ocean time with friends/family.. I have newbies through to old salts. Both. All. Smiles all around. NO complaints. The catamaran experience is not about the sailing; it’s more about the party and the gathering. Do be aware too, unfortunately, many of the charter monohulls on Oahu give you the same experience as the catamaran…the sailing is often forgotten; motoring is indeed easier.

Each to their own tho. You may well prefer the 2-hull, level catamaran over the one-hull (hence “mono”) heel.

Give the gift of an Hawaii Private Monohull Sail.

What could be a more perfect way to celebrate Dad? A repeat client asked her six-year-old son “What should we do for Dad for Father’s Day?” Without missing a beat, “sailing!!”. A surprise gift of a sail on Kaikiwi rewarded Dad who had just flown in from a business trip and was about to fly back out…30 hours at home. As they got in the car he had no idea where he was going…until he did. Sails were set to a beautiful north-north-east wind. So perfect. The family of three went forward to, what I call, “the best seat in the house”. Yep, smiles all around. NO complaints. A Father’s Day gift to be remembered, perhaps for a lifetime. Thanks Mom.

I use a variety of apps while sailing. My iPad and iPhone are both my technicians. I tracked part of our sail on “Waterspeed” I love this app. I am showing you this screenshot to highlight our average speed…7.9knots!!!… just another awesome sail.

Waikiki’s BEST Boat Tour

It’s hot. Its summer. How best to escape the heat than to get on your own private yacht and enjoy Waikiki’s BEST boat tour. Private sailing (you are not sharing the boat with another group) on “Kaikiwi”, the 42 ft Beneteau 411 featured here on my website, has lots of shade so time of day does not affect heat/ sun exposure. It also has lots of space for “bow babes” to soak up the sun and get that rich Hawaiian sun tan. “Kaikiwi” is your yacht for however long you want to sail.

Enjoy a cooling Hawaii trade wind sail.

Feel the fresh trade wind cooling you off immediately as we set sail (YES, we actually DO sail) from Kewalo Basin, 2 miles west of Waikiki. Because this is custom sailing, we can sail any time of day you want and whatever length of time you wish. Our islands are most consistently graced with balmy year-round trade winds, so, any time is a good time to go sailing…..✨✨enjoy a magical SUNRISE cruise, a full sail morning and afternoon adventure sail, or a romantic/ peaceful SUNSET cruise.✨✨.  It is all good.

Sail BLUE Hawaii does not have a liquor license, so please do bring your beverage of choice to help keep you hydrated and COOL (water is supplied). There is ice and a cooler on board for your convenience.

Why choose a sailing charter?

Any occasion is a great one to get out sailing on Hawaiian waters, to enjoy some relaxing and refreshing ocean time, privately and with loved ones. You are NOT sailing with “49 of your closest friends”. 30-60 pax boats, sailing masses of strangers together, seem to have taken over our waters. Sail BLUE Hawaii offers an intimate and exciting atmosphere where you can lay back and catch up with friends and family. Or just spend some quiet and reflective time on your own at the bow. Yes, this is custom sailing…your choice of gentle or adventurous…your captain LISTENS to your specific request.

Whether you are a seasoned sailor or have never been on a sail boat before, the “oh yes” you feel ( or murmur or SHOUT!) when the sails are set and that engine is turned off is real. I hear the sighs of peace/ relief every time…sailor and newbie alike. No engine, much peace. So, say goodbye to the noisy, smelly motorised boat tours that speed through the waves giving you whiplash (and others boat wake :-() ) and are so annoyingly noisy..so much so you can’t even sit back and relax and chat.

Sign up for Sail BLUE Hawaii’s custom private charter, Waikiki’s best boat tour, the one with NO engine noise and smells because, yes, we actually SAIL.
